Structuring the Debate


Debate Structure

Activity
1
Introduce club aims and expectations
Hand out note pads.  
Students label notepads

Introduce debate topic for half term.
Brain storm what students already know.
List these down in a topic web.
Divide students into ‘for’ and ‘against’ teams.

Discuss what else students need to know to present their point.
Students research areas using internet, books or interviews

Students write up their points and arguments

Students think about and write up other side’s arguments.
Students practice presenting points at home or to friends outside of school.

Debate day: both sides present their cases.

Audience votes. Motion is ‘carried’ or ‘not carried’

7
G&T students present the debate to whole school assembly.

Extension: Write to appropriate body regarding raised issues.
